Contacting Senators Wyden and Merkley

Senator Ron Wyden has introduced a bill, cosponsored by Senator Merkley, the River Democracy Act of 2021, to add nearly 4,700 miles of Oregon rivers and streams to the protected status provided by a Wild and Scenic River designation.

All of the rivers and significant waterways of the proposed Douglas-Fir National Monument are included in the Act. You can review why the Rivers of the Monument are so well qualified for inclusion in this great piece of legislation by checking out the Nominations.

You can thank Oregon's Senators and support the enhanced protection of your favorite river by sending an email to Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley

The text of your message will be most effective if you personalize it, especially if you have and can relate a personal experience with the particular waterway.

One additional important aspect of the bill, that the Friends and others encouraged, is the increase of the protected river corridor to a full half mile back from the River. Thanks to Senators Wyden for his hard work on this Bill and to Senators Wyden and Merkley for their introduction of the Act.

For an examination of the importance of the last point (concerning a setback), you can look at the effect of logging along the segment of Quartzville Creek that has already been designated as a wild and scenic river,

and comparing it with the segment now nominated (right).
